Western politics has been pushed so far to the left that small “c” communists, such as former U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and former British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, are often labeled “socialists” or even “democratic socialists.” Some slightly less obvious socialists, such as Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden, are somehow labeled “moderates.”. As of , the Fabian executive committee was comprised of Pease, Podmore, Besant, Shaw and Webb. However in , Annie Besant was converted to the cult of Theosophy by Madame Blavatsky, whom she succeeded in as president of the Theosophical Society.

George Bernard Shaw (/ ˈ b ɜːr n ɑːr d /; 26 July – 2 November ), known at his insistence simply as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the s to his death and beyond. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (   Podmore was one of the founders and members of the first executive committee of the Fabian Society, the title of which he apparently originated (4 Jan. ). He helped to prepare an early, and now rare, report on government organisation of unemployed labour, .

Join the Fabian Society. 1 | Annual Report It’s been another highly impressive year for the Fabian Society, and I want to thank all members of the executive for their support of the society. The Fabian Society has continued to lead the way on new thinking, and on extending across the country the evidence-led debate on the economy and social justice.

A list of members of the Executive Committee,is in "The history of the Fabian Society", by Edward R Pease (second edition, ), pp They include Annie Besant, G D H Cole, R C K Ensor, Harold Laski, James Ramsay Macdonald, George Bernard Shaw, Charlotte Shaw, R H Tawney, Beatrice Webb, Sidney Webb and H G Wells.

Early in the Executive Committee of the Fabian Society issued its printed report for the Annual Business Meeting. In this modest, four-page document occurred an announcement that the course of lectures on The Basis and Prospects of Socialism, delivered in the previous autumn session, was to be published in book form.

The History of the Fabian Society will perhaps chiefly interest the members, present and past, of the Society. But in so far as this book describes the growth of Socialist theory in.

Fabians formed a special committee to address the problems within the society, but the Fabian Executive eventually stonewalled the report.

The ensuing debate between Wells, chair of the Special Committee and Bernard Shaw, chair for the Executive, was carried on over three months at members. In the Fabian Society published a collection of essays, Fabian Essays in Socialism edited by George Bernard Shaw, in order to present their ideas in a coherent form.

The first print run was a conservative 1, copies but after 2 years the Society had sold o copies of the book. The History of the Fabian Society will perhaps chiefly interest the members, present and past, of the Society.

But in so far as this book describes the growth of Socialist theory in England, and the influence of Socialism on the political thought of the last thirty years, I hope it will appeal to a wider circle.

Edward Pease’s The History Of The Fabian Society (Amazon, Project Gutenberg) seemed like a promising starting point, since it was written by one of the Society’s founders and top officials. Pease turns out to be an engaging writer with a good sense of humor.

His book, however, is a bit puzzling.
